All schools are required to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. This includes safeguarding learners from extremist ideologies and radicalisation. This is called the Prevent Duty.
At Parklands we have a Tackling Extremism and Radicalisation policy which all staff are required to read, along with training for staff and Governors in the Prevent Duty. The school also undertakes a Prevent Duty Risk Assessment. All staff understand that it is their duty to protect the children in our care against extremism and radicalisation whether the risks come from their immediate environment or from outside influences. Parklands also have an External Contributors and Speakers policy to risk assess visitors invited in to school to speak to the children.
It our aim at Parklands is to build a resilience in our young learners by fostering our strong ethos of the Parklands Person, and through a values based education. We also provide our learners with a safe space in which they can debate at an age appropriate level and develop critical thinking skills which they may need at some point to be able to challenge extremist arguments. Safeguarding themes are woven through our curriculum and our children learn about the British Values (democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, and respect and tolerance of those with different faith and beliefs) to support the message of Prevent. This is also echoed when the school focusses on the Parklands Person aspects of Safe, Kind, Important, and Respectful.
