The Curriculum at Parklands

At Parklands we aim to deliver a  broad and balanced curriculum that recognises the diverse society we live in. We have a thematic approach to the curriculum incorporating all National Curriculum subjects. Through our themed units of work we aim to engage all types of learners and encourage curiosity, awe and a sense of fun. The children are taught in three broad bands of ability in each class. Work is clearly matched to ability with an appropriate amount of challenge and each child has individual targets in English and Maths.

Children at Parklands are heard read individually each week by a number of adults including their teacher. Our reading books are graded in 'book bands' and include a number of schemes but primarily Oxford Reading Tree, New Way and open Door. Phonics and reading are taught through the Read, Write Inc programme. This programme has been newly adopted by the school and takes a systematic approach to the teaching of phonics, reading and writing with built in intervention to ensure that children who are struggling don't get 'left behind'. To stimulate creativity in writing we have Wow! writing and extended writing on particular themes.

Sex education is addressed through the PSHE curriculum and science in the infant school. Parents/carers can see the materials used and can withdraw their children from this if they so wish.
